More Dog Friendly Places Downtown!

Over the past week, Katie and I, along with some doggy companions have been exploring downtown San Diego. You see, we have the pleasure of working two new in kennel dogs, Nobert and Hope, through some fear issues.

Norbert is a goofy 2-ish year old pit bull who suffers from a rare genetic disorder similar to Down's Syndrome in humans. He has a learning disability but his family loves him and anyone who meets him instantly knows why. Unfortunately, Norbert is a rescue and his past is unknown. The only thing we do know is that whatever his past may be, it was scary and it caused him to have a great deal of anxiety around strangers.

Hope on the other hand is a boisterous Staffy Bull Terrier who is also a rescue. She is stubborn and would love nothing more than to drag you all over town, chasing birds, dogs and any other small animal she spots. And guess what??? She gets away with it because she is so darn adorable. But again, Hope comes from an unknown background and has developed some fear issues of her own.

Hope and Norbert have become partners in crime. In order to help them through their rehabilitation process, Katie and I have been extensively socializing them downtown. A great chance for us to work on their socialization came at lunchtime. Katie and I would always grab a quick bite at Subway or somewhere similar until we realized their are a TON of dog friendly restaurants downtown. What better chance for socialization than to bring the doggies to a restaurant where they could hang out for an hour or two and get exposure to the sights, sounds and people of downtown.

So far, we have visited 3 great places.....here is a rundown for anyone interested....

First stop....Gaslamp Tavern at 868 5th Ave.. Wrap around (sort of) dog friendly patio with plenty of seating. Food was good and beer selection was better than most. Decently priced as well. If you are headed here with a pooch, sit on the side of the patio facing E st. - there is more space and for us the bar was way too tall and somewhat uncomfortable.....

Second stop....Bare Back Grill at 624 E. St.....rather small patio but dog friendly nonetheless. The people here were ultra dog friendly....the dogs got drinks before we did....definite plus! The food was average but they have a great lunch special daily. Definitely work a look....

Third stop and probably the favorite to date....Nicky Rotten's on 5th. Dog Friendly patio is on the smaller side but the food is fabulous and the the prices are VERY reasonable. The doggies got lots of socialization here with new people and sounds as 5th ave. is very busy....

Katie and I plan to try new places with the pooches throughout their stay in the program and we will keep you updated on what we find!
